Monument to the Fallen National Liberation Struggle soldiers

A bronze sculpture of a fighting partisan, the work of Postojna-born sculptor Frančišek Smerdu, rounds off the image of the square and shares its name with it. The monument, with its dramatic expressive power, reminds us of the difficult war times on the already hard karst land.

Attention! Step closer to Smerdu’s partisan and take a good look at where he’s aiming.

Frančišek Smerdu (1908–1964), an academic sculptor who studied both in Vienna and with the great Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović in Zagreb, is recognised in Slovenia primarily for his public, monumental sculptures. With such creations, he left his mark in Postojna as well.
