The historicist-designed building with a varied and picturesque facade was built in 1908. At first, it was the seat of the district administration.
In 1928, on the second floor of the building, the speleological institute got its premises, which was advocated by Ivan Andrej Perko (1876–1941), the first Slovenian professional speleologist and karstologist, and director and great promoter of the Postojna Cave, even before the First World War. Today, the building houses the headquarters of the municipal administration and the administrative unit of Postojna.
