The Carters cycling trail follows the ancient route of the Carter’s or the Mast Road, which ran between Planina and Razdrto.
This is the oldest transport connection that went through the Postojna Gate, where carters used to transport long masts and other ship timber to the ports of the northern Adriatic. On the way through the village of Planina, you will be reminded of the old days of transportation by the old carters’ inns and farmhouses with their wide overhangs and large courtyards.
At the Toplar hayrack in Belsko, you can see an ethnographic collection of more than 200 exhibits and objects that people who lived in the area used in tasks related to agriculture, livestock breeding, forestry, transport, shoemaking, blacksmithing, and other activities. The route will also lead you through the village of Landol, where you will pass an old tollhouse. There, back in their days, carters had to pay their tolls for using the roads.
