Sovič is a 677-meter-high city hill covered with forest, so to speak, in the middle of Postojna, right above the oldest part of Postojna, which is called Majlont. Its dominant position above the city offers many amazing views.
At the top of Sovič stand the ruins of Postojna Castle (Adelsberg), also called the Old Castle, military trenches and a wonderful vantage point from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city, the plain of the Pivka River, the outline of Nanoščica in the distance, and the peaks of Nanos, Suhi vrh, Debeli vrh and Hrušica complete the panorama. On the way to the top, you can take a break at two viewing platforms.
This historical route takes the visitor to discover Sovič’s colorful past. The individual remains tell us secrets from the history of Postojna during the walk, as we find traces of a prehistoric settlement, the mighty medieval castle of Postojna, the castle chapel of St. Ursula and the castle outbuilding. Along the way, on the slopes of the hill, we can see the remains of a system of defense trenches and a military bunker from the 20th century.
TIP
The historical route on Sovič is 400 m long. Since the two paths intertwine, the Historic and Natural trails can be walked together as a circular path around Sovič, with a total length of 2.2 km.
